The basis of our original breeding stock revolved around the South Texas genetics of Sal, Primo, Paco, Clint, Floco, and the Schulte Buck. We also have some northern genetics from Kansas, as well as, Herb G. Sells’ Johnny Patrick line from Pennsylvania.

At V-Tex it is our belief in order to create a great whitetail you must have a large mainframe, long beam length, and long tine length. We have consistently strived for this in all of the breed bucks that we have used. This fall will be our 6th year using artificial insemination. We currently have over 100 AI-sired whitetails in our pens. Sires of the majority of our artificially bred deer consist of Thunder 262 B&C, Hoosier 219 B&C, Thunderstorm 217 B&C, Silverstorm 300 + B&C, Soaring Eagle 288 B&C, Rold Gold 273 B&C, Bambi 727 219 B&C, Bullwinkle 243 B&C, Gladiator 294 B&C, Big Boy 250 + B&C, Cactus Jr 216 B&C, Diablo 302 B&C, Sully 238 B&C, Bambi Sawblade 216 B&C, Freedom 254 B&C, Liberty 285 B&C, Buddy II 297 B&C, and we also have AI’ed to our own Eagle Eye scoring 196 B&C @ 2 years & Black Eagle (a soaring Eagle son) who scored 212 B&C @ 2.

Our doe herd is the mainstay of our breeding operation. We think the doe is at least 50% of the equation of any great buck. That is why we put so much emphasis on our females. We have does out of most of the AI sire listed above. All of our AI-sired deer are DNA verified as well as most of our natural serviced does. All our fawns are tagged, tattooed, and hair pulled (for DNA testing) at birth. We have been on the Texas Animal Health Commission’s CWD monitoring program since its implementation in the summer of 2002.

For the last 5 years in our natural service breeding program, we used V-Tex Pablo 202 B&C @ 6 years & V-Tex Amigo 201 B&C @ 5 years. Pablo on the sire side is a grandson of the Schulte Buck 200 + B&C and on the dam side has Primo 196” and Paco 217” as grandsire and great grandsire. Pablo sons have great width, long tine length, and long main beams. He has sired several sons over 200 inches, as well as 2 sons over 28 inches inside measurement. Amigo is a Primo 196” son and a Paco 217” grandson. Amigo sons have above average width, long tine length, long main beams, along with great mass. Pablo and Amigo are both pure South Texas bucks and both have produced sons with drop tines. Pablo’s 2-year son, Crown Royal, has six drops.

Two years ago we added Eagle Eye 196” @ 2 to our breeding program. At 2 years of age we bred him to 20 does and collected semen from him. We think that is why he did not make a jump in B&C score at the age of 3, but he now has 16 yearling sons with 8 to 15 points.

Last year we used Black Eagle as a breeder to a small number of does and collected semen from him. He is AI-sired and is the son of Soaring Eagle 288 B&C. Black Eagle scored 182 as a yearling and this year scored 212 @ 2 years of age.

This year we are adding Hidalgo, Montana, and Desert Storm to our breeding program. Hidalgo and Montana are both 4 years of age, Y4 186” sons, Sal 207” grandsons, and their mothers are sisters. Hidalgo and Montana are both mainframe 6x6 and both have double drop tines. We estimate them to score between 215 and 225. They are both 7/8 Texas and 1/8 Kansas genetics. Desert Storm is a 2 year old Silverstorm 300”+ son. His dam is a Primo daughter and a Paco granddaughter on the top side of the pedigree, as well as a Kotsur Clint 217” granddaughter on the bottom side. He is a 6x6 mainframe with 4 extra points and we are estimating him to score very close to 200 inches.
